How we choose physicians

In selecting physician groups for our Honor Roll, Harvard Pilgrim uses HEDIS nationally endorsed quality measures for both adult and pediatric patients, focusing on three areas:

 Acute care

  • Appropriate Testing for Children with Pharyngitis
  • Appropriate Treatment for Children with Upper Respiratory Infection
  • Avoidance of Antibiotic Treatment for Adults with Acute Bronchitis
  • Use of Imaging for Low Back Pain
  • Initiation and Engagement of Alcohol and Other Drug Dependence Treatment
  • Antidepressant Medication Management (continuation)

Chronic care

  • Use of Appropriate Meds for People with Asthma (all ages)
  • Comprehensive Diabetes Care (composite of HbA1c testing and Nephropathy testing)
  • Annual Monitoring for Patients on Persistent Medications (combined performance for 4 drug types)

Preventive care

  • Breast Cancer Screening
  • Cervical Cancer Screening
  • Chlamydia Screening in Women (all ages)
  • Adolescent Well-Care Visits
  • Well-Child Visits in the Third, Fourth, Fifth and Sixth Years of Life

Please Note:

  • The evaluation of the three above areas compares actual physician group performance to national performance at the 75th and 90th percentiles
  • Physician groups earn points if their domain score is better than performance at the 75th percentile (1 point) or at the 90th percentile (2 points)
  • Physician groups that earn 4 or more points are named to the Honor Roll (the equivalent of performance at the national 75th percentile for 2 domains and the 90th for the third domain)
  • Physician groups that perform at or above the national 90th percentile in all three domains are named to the Honor Roll with Distinction (as indicated by an asterisk)
