The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) of 1996 is a federal law developed to protect consumer rights, reduce health care fraud and abuse, and support administrative simplification in the health care industry. Implementing HIPAA's provisions will improve and standardize electronic transactions and will ensure that privacy and security policies are in place to safeguard health information.
Harvard Pilgrim met the first of several HIPAA administrative simplification provision compliance dates in April 2003. Harvard Pilgrim is committed to ensuring the privacy of our members and our compliance with HIPAA's provisions further ensures member information continues to be carefully monitored, evaluated and protected.
Harvard Pilgrim is compliant with the applicable provisions of the Transaction and Code Set provisions of HIPAA's Administrative Simplification Rule specific to provider and employer based electronic transactions.
As of April 2005 Harvard Pilgrim is fully compliant with the HIPAA Security Rule, furthering our commitment to safeguarding our member's information by implementing the required administrative, physical and technical safeguards.
