Administration of Zostavax by Pharmacists

Last month, the Massachusetts Board of Pharmacy determined that pharmacists and pharmacy interns are restricted to administering the herpes zoster vaccine, Zostavax, to adults age 60 or older, even when presented with a prescription for adults ages 50 to 59.

This is based on a decision by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), a panel of immunization experts that advises the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on immunization practices. The panel decided not to recommend the vaccine for adults age 50 through 59 but it does recommend that the herpes zoster vaccine be routinely administered to adults age 60 and older.

For more information, please refer to the advisory from the Massachusetts Board of Pharmacy, as well as the the ACIP recommendation for the herpes zoster vaccine.
