Payment Policy Update: Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy

For claims processed beginning Jan. 1, 2015, Harvard Pilgrim will not cover magnetic resonance spectroscopy (CPT 76390), a noninvasive analytical technique that can be used to study metabolic changes related to brain tumors, strokes, Alzheimer’s disease, and other diseases affecting the brain. Harvard Pilgrim’s policy is consistent with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, which has designated magnetic resonance spectroscopy as an investigational procedure and issued a national non-coverage determination of CPT 76390.

For more information, please refer to Harvard Pilgrim’s updated Radiology Payment Policy and our updated Non-Covered Services Payment Policy.
