Medical Policy for IgG Allergy Testing

Serum IgG and IgG subclass antibody testing have been proposed as methods of identifying levels of sensitivity to various allergens, but there is disagreement in the medical community about how effective IgG antibody testing is for this purpose.

After evaluating the clinical literature, Harvard Pilgrim has found that while there is evidence to support the medical necessity of IgG testing for venom immunotherapy, there is not sufficient clinical evidence to support its use for other conditions, such as food allergy. As a result, effective July 1, 2014, Harvard Pilgrim will cover IgG and IgG subclass allergen testing for venom immunotherapy only.

For more information, please refer to the Serum IgG Allergy Testing Medical Policy.
