Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT)

Benefit From the Convenience of Electronic Funds Transfer

Save time. Save paper. Enjoy greater convenience. If you are receiving paper checks, we encourage you to make the simple switch to electronic funds transfer (EFT) today.

Harvard Pilgrim offers EFT for our commercial HMO, PPO, and POS products, as well as our Medicare Enhance and Medicare Supplement products, to providers through Payspan. Payspan allows you to direct your payments electronically to a bank account and offers the convenience of being your one-stop source for your electronic payment, electronic 835 electronic remittance advices (ERAs), and Explanation of Payment (EOP) equivalent.

In Payspan’s self-service environment, you can manage your electronic payments, access associated 835 ERAs, review current or past payments, and view, download, and print up to 18 months of EOPs, eliminating the hassle of storing paper copies. Providers who register for EFT receive their electronic 835 ERAs and EOP equivalents from Payspan; therefore, Payspan users will no longer receive a paper EOP or an 835 directly from Harvard Pilgrim.

You may download your 835s or EOP equivalents from your Payspan account or you may choose to have Paspan send your 835 directly to a clearinghouse. To do so, follow the instructions for routing 835s to an electronic mailbox when activating your account. This feature is available for the data exchange partners listed here.

Register today

To receive electronic payments, you must register with Payspan. If you do not currently use Payspan for other payors, you may obtain a  registration code and PIN for creating an account by calling PaySpan Provider Services at 877-331-7154 and selecting option 1 or by visiting www.payspanhealth.com/RequestRegCode/.

When you begin registering, please have your bank name, routing number, and account number handy. Also, it’s important to fill in the NPI field with an accurate NPI at the time of registration. This is the NPI that will appear in the header of your 835. Including an accurate NPI helps ensure that any clearinghouse or vendor you work with is able to properly access your 835. If this field is left blank during registration the NPI will later appear as “9999999999.”

Step-by-step registration instructions are available on the Payspan website.

If you are already registered with PaySpan, you can update your existing PaySpan account to include Harvard Pilgrim. If you need assistance in adding Harvard Pilgrim to your PaySpan account, email providersupport@payspanhealth.com or call PaySpan Provider Services (877-331-7154, option 1).

Important notes

EFTs are processed every Friday. Please note that fully activated enrollment takes a minimum of 48 hours. Therefore, if you enroll on a Thursday, your first electronic payments would occur the following Friday, not the following day.

Payspan is available for Harvard Pilgrim’s contracted medical providers. Behavioral Health providers can register to receive EFT through Harvard Pilgrim’s behavioral health partner Optum/UBH at www.providerexpress.com.
