New Product Offering: NorthStar Preferred Care Plan

On January 1, 2013, a new network-based product—the NorthStar Preferred Care plan—became available to self-funded employers in Southeastern Massachusetts. Southcoast Health System, in partnership with Health Plans, Inc. and Harvard Pilgrim, is offering this product.

NorthStar Preferred Care will be administered by Harvard Pilgrim’s wholly-owned subsidiary Health Plans, Inc. and features a three-tier network design with copayments, deductible, and out-of-pocket maximum cost sharing similar to the Southcoast Health Plan, which was implemented in January 2011. Members must select a PCP; however, members can see any provider in or out of network, and do not need a referral to see a specialist.

You will be able to recognize members by their ID cards, which will include logos for NorthStar Preferred Care, Harvard Pilgrim, and Health Plans, as in the example below.

Be sure to check the back of the card for information on member eligibility verification, claim submission, pharmacy, and pre-certifying inpatient stays. You may also call Health Plans, Inc. at (855) 675-3636 with any questions.
